when you bought this phone online did you have to purchase a plan to go along with it?

Answer  No. I activated it later, without a contract on my existing Verizon account. It did not require any contract extension as I provided the equipment. Reminder...This phone can only be activated on the Verizon network. Though I am now using the Samsung Droid Charge on the Verizon network, this was a great phone. Is compatible with GSM network in Romania?

Answer  I don't know. It is a GSM phone that works in the USA. I would call Verzon Wireless customer service directly or your local carrier there and get the support questions answered. Your carrier in Romania should know.

is this a smartphone? requiring Verizon's 29.99 per month data plan?

Answer  Yes, it's a smartphone and requires a data plan to activate. Due to its design, you will never be able to activate with anyone but Verizon either. I had one for a year. Best Samsung with Windows on it. I upgraded to the Samsung Droid Charge with Android platform. It's much better with all the apps but I was always happy when I had the Omnia II.
